School Times for 2012-2013

At the April 17thBoard of Education meeting I will recommend the following school times for next year.  We have tried a variety of ways to keep the remaining times but were unsuccessful.  We believe that these times will allow the best routes and maintain a smooth pick up and drop off for all of our children. Times may change by a few minutes earlier or later but not sustainably.  I will be sending notices home after the break about parent interest in morning and afternoon SCOPE programs at each building.  Typically if we have 20 or more parents interested it is easy to establish a program.

High School                  7:26-2:18

Middle School               7:49-2:41

Meadow Drive               8:12-2:49

Hampton Street             8:42-3:19

Jackson Avenue            8:50-3:27

Mr Nagler, I have noticed that many parents have inquired about the close times btwn Hampton/Jackson & Meadow/Middle School.
You keep mentioning SCOPE, I am not understanding how SCOPE will help in anyway. I AM available to pick up my children after school and do NOT require SCOPE, my problem is that I will not be able to be at 2 places at 1 time. I am assuming that the Meadow bus will be arriving to our bus stop at almost the same time that I will have to pick up my 5th grader from Middle school.
My refrence earlier to the bus loop “debacle” was the volume of parental concerns and complaints that was being thrown around at the time of the proposal! Saftey of the Children is always my primary concern!!!!
Busing the entire student population of Jackson ave would allow parents with other children in other bused schools to say at the corner to receive their childen shortly after receiving their children from Hampton or Meadow. It would help with logistics. My appologies if I have offended you in any way which you response indicated.
But please if you have suggestion other than SCOPE for myself as well as the many parents with children being dismissed from different schools at the same time please let us know.

I received a flyer from SCOPE today in my son’s backpack regarding registration for afternoon scope for 2012-2013. There was no mention of the possibility of a morning SCOPE. I was wondering if a survey was still in the works to see if we had enough interest to offer the am program? I would certainly make use of it next year for both my children if it is available. Thanks.

  3. If enough parents are interested SCOPE will begin the process of having Meadow certified. It is a long process so the sooner we begin the better; but it should not be an issue to have everything in place by September.

I heard that Meadow may not be able to have a SCOPE program because they are not certified. Do you know if there is any truth to this?

How does SCOPE alleviate the issue of parents who pick up with kids in Hampton/Jackson and Middle/Meadow? SCOPE is an after school program normally used/needed by working parents. That doesn’t apply to those that can’t get from one school to another in time since dismissal will only be 8 minutes apart.

  6. I do not understand this post. Next year Jackson will be grades 3 and 4 and we will be bussing teh entire district to teh buildiing. I also do not understand the use of the word “debacle” I do not categorize engaging the community in a discussion to find a solution for the safety of children a debacle.

  7. The proposed times are the best to make runs effeciently and on time. We did try to flip flop Meadow and Hampton and it did not work

  8. we will be sending notices home about SCOPE after the break. As long as we get 20 interested parents per building we can have a SCOPE program at each school. I will send an automated call to remind parents.

As a parent with children in Meadow, Jackson, and Middle school, no matter how you tweak the times it seems I will have to be in 2 places at the same time. I was wondering, now that we are no longer busing the entire district to Willis, is it possible to bus the entire district to Jackson? It seems this may even have a positive impact on the bus loop debacle! Couldnt the money saved not building the bus loop pay for the 2 or 3 buses this idea may require?

  10. I understand that the distict needs to make the bus routes work, but is it necessary to change the times of the k-2 schools by so much time. Hampton has always been an early school. Many working parents have counted on this in order for them to only have to pay for afternoon care. Now your are asking our neediest parents to pay for before school and after school care. Meadow Dr. has always been a late start school except for this year. Would it not be better for all parents involved to make each school the hours that they have always been for so long? Hampton parents have counted on that school to be an early start and Meadow parents have always had the later start. Is there any way that can continue.

My mistake it is Willis that currently starts later, just wondering why Hampton is the school starting later?

I was wondering since Hampton already has Scope in place if it is possible or Hampton to remain at the 8:12 start time? Starting at approx 8:48, how early can you drop off, 10 minutes before? Meadow already starts later, what was the reason behind the change to Hampton starting later?

I have stressed this before on this blog and I would like to reiterate the importance of affordable before and after school care for children of working families. We need before care programs that are housed at the individual schools, especially if the after school programs are consolidated at Jackson. A five year old getting dropped off at one location at 7:30 for before school, bussed to another at 8 for the regular school day, then bussed to another at 3pm for an after school program….. all before their commute home for the day is a lot of traveling and undue stress for our younger students.

When will approximate am bus pickup and approximate pm bus dropoff times be known? I’m not asking for concrete decisions, just approximations. Thanks.

I am a parent that will be having a Kindergartener in Meadow and a 3rd grader at Jackson. They both will be bus children. Is there a way to know the approximate times the buses would be returning the children to their home bus stops as I need to figure out if I need to send my children to SCOPE everyday or just a couple. Three days I work till 3:30 an the other two 2:40. I’m a bit more concerned about Jackson since that school is further away.
secondly is there a possibility of having a SCOPE program at Meadow?

  16. Yes it is our hope this will be the last change

My concern is the close dismissal times between Hampton and Jackson schools and Meadow and the Middle School. If you are a parent that has a child in both, is it feasible, if you child is literally walking out the door at those times, that you can make it to the other school in 8 minutes, find parking, walk to the area that you child is getting dismissed, in time? Hampton and Jackson are a bit closer together but 8 minutes still seems tight. But I don’t think there is anyway 8 minutes will work for Meadow and Middle School. Currently, the two closest dismissals (not including High School, I’m talking just about the lower grades, younger kids) is Middle (2:32) and Hampton/Meadow (2:49) – a 17 minute window to get from one end of the district to the other (Middle School to Meadow) is a big difference from an 8 minute window.

Dr Nagler I can understand you having to change the school times for 2012. My only question is why is Meadow Drive such an early start compared to Hampton Street? Is it not possible to keep them better in line with one another? If it is not possible to keep it in line, when would the parents be advised of where the Scope program will be housed for the upcoming school year? I truly appreciate you keeping jackson Ave as far from the start times of Chaminade HS. As I previously stated the change has done a world of good for the congestion on Jericho Tpke and Emory Road where I am the crossing guard. I would appreciate a reply whenever you can and I do understand you have many issues you are working thru to make this upcoming school year another GREAT SUCCESS!!!!

Is it the hope of the district, that these hours remain constant for years to come? (Give or take a few minutes on either side).
