Science Camp- Feedback Needed

Mrs. Burns and I are currently in discussions with CAMP Invention.  They are a company that organizes summer science camps in school districts. The program features four 90 minute science modules entitled Innovate, I can invent, Geo-Games and the Create program.  Camp can be delivered in either:

  • A week long full day camp or
  • Two weeks for half day

The program is open for children entering 1st grade through 6th grade.  If you register online by March 15th the tuition is $220 – late registration is $245.  We are thinking of housing it at Jackson Avenue.  Parents would have to drop off and pick up as well as provide snack and lunch. (no lunch in the half day program)

Are you interested in this?  Would you enroll your child?  If so which set up-?  1 week all day or 2 weeks ½ day.  Are there certain weeks that are better than others?  We need a minimum of 35 students to run it and I am looking for some feedback as to whether we can get that many interested students.

We would love a summer science camp a Meadow dr. Half days are best for us. Our son is in kindergarten and loves madscience.

I would be interested for both of my children who will be going into 2nd grade. I would prefer half days since summer is primetime for outdoor activities. I agree that coordinating it not to conflict with summer rec hours would proabably be best for enrollment.

I would be interested for both my daughters who are entering 1st and 4th grade in September. I think its a great idea and I think the last week in June is ideal. I would also be interested in any other program that could be run throughout the summer that involves both girls (since the Mineola Summer Rec program does not accept children until they are ready to enter 2nd grade).

I would be interested in this for my son who will be going into 1st grade. August – after the rec program ends – would be best. I prefer two weeks of 1/2 days but the other option is acceptable too. I am assuming this is open to IEP students as well as Gen. Ed. students?

  5. It looks like I have to pass on this one. Having myself and my wife working full-time during the week, any program that needs kids to be picked-up before 6PM is out of the question for us. Does anybody have suggestions on real full-day summer camps?

  6. I would be interested in the science program for my son, who will be entering 1st grade. However, I would also be interested in a district-run multi-subject enrichment program, like some other districts on LI have run. I’m sure there would be many parents in the disctrict who would be interested and would pay for such a program.

An all day educational program is a lot for most children during the summer. Can this be partnered with a PE component for part of the day? Maybe do it as a one, two or three week program? Two 90-min science blocks and one 90-min PE.

We would be interested in a program in July.

I would be very interested in a district run summer rec program. I am new to the district as my son is currently in kindergarten but when I looked into enrolling him in the Mineola rec program we were not eligible because we reside in Williston Park.

I would be interested for my son that would be entering 5th grade in September. I would prefer whole day program, but 1/2 is good also. The other thing is many children participate in the Summer Rec programs that start in July at Mineola/ Williston, maybe the week of June 24?

Our son (going into 2nd grade) would be very interested in the science camp. Our preference would be for the program not to conflict with the Mineola rec program. Perhaps either the week after school ends in June or after the rec program ends in August could be possibilities.

  11. This program is NOT a district program. The district is hiring them as a self-funded program. (similar to a PTA contracting with Chess nuts, Fastronics etc.) We could explore offering other programs at parent expense and organizing them if you think people would want that.

  12. The children will be divided into age groups. So far feedback has indicated August is better than July.

Yes, this program sounds interesting. I think my son would probably do better with half days.

The science camp sounds interesting although a bit costly. Any chance we can bring back the athletic SUMMER REC program that the district had years ago? We have a fantastic summer music program, and now exploring this cool science thing….can we explore the option of bringing back Summer Rec? I sort of like the idea of my kid running around in the outdoors during the summer.

I am interested for my son who would be entering 1st grade. Preference is for the 2-week/half day option.

Would the kids all be together or would they slit the kids up by age? There is a big difference between 1st and 6th grade.

A lot of mineola families take advantage of the summer Rec program at Wilson park which typical runs from the beginning of July until the first week of August. not sure how many would choose this over that if you were to run the program during july. The cost for 5 weeks is cheaper than the $220 for a week. Would the program run in july or august?

  17. We haven’t gotten that far.

I would be interested in a full week. Do you know what the drop off and pick up times would be?

  19. Cindy Velez Jan 8th 2013

My son would be entering six grade and he would be interested…he prefers two weeks 1/2 day program, but is flexible

  20. I forgot to include the website- http://www.campinvention.org

I’d like to know more about it. Not for my daughter — she’s 17 — but the educational non-profit I work with (CFI-LI) is keenly interested in science education. We may be able to donate a scholarship for a student to attend the camp (or any science camp).

    Thanks,
    Amy Frushour Kelly
