Pennies for Peace 2010

On Tuesday I once again enjoyed a Service Learning Project at the High school.  Ninth grade students in Dr. Connolly’s and Ms. McDonnell’s classes taught lessons about Guatemala to 3rd grade student’s from Hampton street (Ms. Carretta and Ms. Doherty’s classes)  The ninth grades designed lesson plans and engaged the third graders in a service learning project designed to raise money to build a school in Guatemala.  Why Guatemala?  Currently a Mineola HS alum Stephanie Fabrico (2003) is working in the Peace Corp in a small village in Guatemala. Previously Stephanie worked with Ms. Levi’s class in a series of ‘skype’ lessons.  Congresswoman McCarthy (graduate of Mineola HS) joined the students as they worked.  The student service center at the HS continues to demonstrate what it means “to contribute positively to a global society”.  Our graduates continue to serve and help people at home and abroad.  The connections made help our younger students to see and value volunteerism.

  1. Skype is really a great communication and learning tool. Inexpensive too if you’re going skype to skype.

Nice to see one of our graduates in the Peace Corps.
