The Spaniards have Arrived!

This morning I had the pleasure of meeting 22 exchange students from Spain.  The student exchange program is a long standing tradition in Mineola.  Last year Mr. Pereira organized a trip to Portugal.  This year Wendy Forte and Elsa Coelho have organized an exchange from Spain.  Our students and families host an exchange student and immerse them in our culture and traditions.  In turn, when our student travels to Spain in the spring they will experience Spanish culture and traditions. It brought back memories of when I organized an exchange in 2000 to Mexico when I was the AP in the middle school.

It was amazing seeing the reactions of the American students when the Spaniards arrived off the bus. For some of them, it was as if they had been lost long friends who have been reunited. I am hoping to be able to upload the video footage to my website soon so that everyone can see the connection and friendship that has developed between our high school students and those from Spain. There aren’t words that can express the extent of the excitement of the students from both countries when they met. The images are priceless!
