Mineola Superintendent's Blog

It takes a village…

I would like to personally thank and publically recognize Mr. Anthony Demelas.  As you might imagine snow has been a major concern for the school system for the last week.  The last storm made it very dangerous to enter and exit our schools.  We ran out places to put the snow!  Since our equipment pushes the snow rather than lift and move it, we had poor access for cars and buses around the schools.  While we made arrangements with a private contractor to move the snow to our fields he was not able to clear all of the buildings.  Along comes Mr. Demelas, a resident of Mineola and a landscaper by trade.  He volunteered his equipment and time to clear both the Middle school and Jackson Avenue to insure our student’s safety.  He worked late Saturday night, after working all day on another job.  I can’t begin to describe what a life saver he is.  Without his efforts we would not be able to clear snow at two buildings.  Mr. Demelas also volunteered his time last year to create the ‘quiet zone’ at Jackson Street.  He was too modest to give me his business card-so who has that info please post it for everyone to have access.  Thanks Again!

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  2. It was a cooperative effort between the Village and the School district. They supported overtime for their employees last night to clear the snow when no cars were present. I too thank them very much!

Thank you for the kind words towards my husband. It was the least he could do to try and make a bad situation better. He only wishes he would have been able to clear away more of the snow at Jackson but he was not able to due to the cars from Chaminade being parked in Jackson’s lot. I would like to thank whoever it was that FINALLY cleared Saville Road between Jackson Avenue School and Chaminade and Jackson Avenue in front of Jackson Avenue School. What a pleasant surprise this morning. That will alleviate quite alot of congestion and make it much safer. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you Mr. Demelas for your hard work. It is nice to see the good in people when we too often only hear about the negative.

I also want to extend my personal thanks to Mr. Demelas and his family (because I’m sure we were taking him away from them!). We are truly grateful for you and all the volunteers who continue to keep this community such a great place to live.
