Critical Service Learning
For many years Mineola UFSD has been at the forefront of service learning; the notion of connecting curriculum and community service. Our robust Student Service Center provides opportunities for students to contribute time, knowledge and energy to help others. For the past few years Dr. Maureen Connolly and Mr. Michael Furey have expanded service learning to pair with our mission of contributing positively to a global society. They have embraced a new form of service learning known as ‘critical service learning’ which is defined as “a political project embedded with socio-justice orientation with a commitment to guiding students to develop the skills, ideas, and attributes necessary to foster equity and freedom in K-12 schools and other contexts”. They have authored a chapter about Mineola High School in a new book entitled, Critical service-learning as Revolutionary Pedagogy. I would like to congratulate Maureen, Mike as well as Diana Feige a professor from Adelphi university who we have enjoyed a long partnership. Professor Fiege chronicles the happenings in Ms. MaryAnn Beach’s classroom.
This recognition serves as another wonderful example of the educational experiences our children receive.
They are required to pass a senior project course. Many choose to do community service as part of that course.
Are our students required to do community service hours in order to graduate?
