Mineola Superintendent's Blog

62 %

I asked the high school administration to poll the senior class.  The question: How many of you have been in Mineola schools from Kindergarten through grade 12 without interruption? The answer- 62%.  I do not believe many residents realize how ‘mobile’ our school population is. The obvious challenge is being accountable for achievement results when we do not have the children for their entire educational experience.  It might be worthwhile to begin to collect data on student achievement that also tracks the number of years in the district.  My hypothesis would be that there is a direct correlation between the  number of students that perform at proficiency and the number of years those same students have been in the school system.

One considerable element in this movement might be that many children begin their educations in our local Catholic schools. (St. Aidans, and until recently, Corpus Christi.) New parents make educational choices, often religious or cultural, when their kids are just three. Sometimes tuition becomes a burden; sometimes it becomes evident that public schools have what some children need to grow.

I was very surprised to hear low this number actually is. It would be very interesting to see what the results of tracking this number would be.
