Contributing Positively to a Global Society…
No one does it better! I asked Mr. Escobar to coordinate a district campaign to help raise monies for Haitian relief. In addition to a district administrator, we have several students that lost loved ones in this tragedy. The result was a Pancake Breakfast to end all breakfasts. When I arrived the line was already half way down the hall. All toll we collected over $10,000. In addition to donations students held a variety of events.
I asked Michael Escobar to describe the HS efforts, he wrote: The Red Cross Club sold Haitian flags that students and faculty could sign and have posted on the wall in lobby. Also, the winter sports teams and other major clubs got involved by donating specific items. The Bowling Program and Cheerleaders brought in pasta, the Wrestling team brought in garbage bags, the Drama Club brought in blankets, the Boys Basketball brought in bandages and hand sanitizer, the Winterguard brought in rice, and the Track teams and Girl’s Basketball team all brought in dry milk, dry beans, paper towels, soap and toothpaste. Finally, the teachers had their tremendous bake sale I’m sure you heard about, which Mrs. Lazo conjured on Thursday morning. Word soon spread through the teachers through word of mouth and e-mail, and the bake sale was a great success the very next morning.
Meadow Drive , in conjunction with the local Girl scout troop, also donated supplies. Grade 1: Toiletries; Grade 2: Food; Grade 3: paper goods; Grade 4: first aide supplies; Grade 5: Children’s Products (vitamins, diapers)
At Cross Street the Student council raised $320 by selling bracelets. In addition, Project Green is doing a fundraiser for Heifer International. They are “Coloring for a Cause.” Our cafeteria is being decorated with farm animals colored by the children for $1 each. Each grade has been assigned a specific barnyard animal. Whichever grade raises the most money will get to choose which combination of animals to donate to Haiti through Heifer International.
At Hampton the K-Kids collected $400 in cash donations last week. This week they set up a pickle sale at lunch time (20 nickels for a pickle – Haiti is in a pickle, let’s help them out). Parent Abbe Sargeant donated 200 large pickles. They sold $72 worth of pickles during our 1 hour lunch period! Next week is strawberries and cream for $1.
OOps forgot Jackson- Jackson rasied over $1600. %1,00 form staff and $600 from teh student council.
Hi Dr.Nagler,
It was nice to see you at Mrs. Moroney’s class 2 weeks ago.
I’m glad we are selling pickles &strawberries for Haiti.
Hope to see you at the MMS play this weekend.

I attended the Haitian event this past weekend. It was so nice to see the students and teachers some I know personally contributing their service to such a great cause. I came with a group from the Mineola Fire Department so we have seen our share of hardship and understand the importance of helping people in need. We were really impressed.
I must say I was so impressed and proud of all the students, staff and residents who worked so hard to make this such an amazing event. It was wonderful to see the whole community come together. We really do live in a great town!
I also want to add that the children who participate in Project Green at Cross are dedicated to all their projects and they are wonderfully giving by nature. This current project for Heifer will also provide much needed help and support to the people of Haiti.
It is incredible to see the caring effort by all. Mineola is such a wonderful and giving community. My K-Kids are an example of great generosity in spirit to all. Thank you Mrs. McCarthy for the compliment. Mr. DiGennaro and I are very fortunate to work with such a phenomenal group of children.
How wonderful to see such an effort by all !
Unfortunately, I was working on Saturday and was unable to attend the pancake breakfast. However, our unit secretary is from Haiti and was on her cell phone speaking with her mom who has lost everything and is living on the streets of Haiti right now. When I told her what the district was doing that very morning, it brought tears to her eyes. She was going to tell her mom about all the people trying to help. She asked me to thank all of you–students, teachers, parents and community members for all that you are doing to help Haiti!
That is great news!! I
Just wanted to thank Mrs. Emmerson and Mr. DiGennaro for the great work they do with the K-Kids! and the k-kids rock!
