What does a PreK- 2 look like?

Last night I presented to the Board my preliminary thoughts on a PreK-2 building.  We have a wonderful opportunity to suspend our thoughts and beliefs about what a school is and create the perfect learning experience for our youngest students.  So I ask you, if you had to rank the most important outcome for a student to have after 4 years, what would it be? The structure of the building should center on what we believe is the most critical outcome.

    One thing that always made me happy and secure about sending my girls to school was how much they wanted to attend , even when they were not feeling up to par. My wish is for all students to feel this way , and for our staff to make this a priority for students that do not.
    Teaching Spanish to all our students from pre-k on has been an ideal I can’t let go of. Why wouldn’t a great system prepare their students in this area. I can’t think of any work setting in this country where speaking Spanish would not be a great benefit. Thank you for asking.

    I believe the Mineola School District has made great advances over the past ten years in Science and Math. I hope this will continue but feel the need for ELA upgrades is something to consider. Without a good base of reading comprehension and writing skills, everything else becomes harder to learn. To quote the NY State Education Department;
    “Success in school and in life is determined in large part by competence in language. As a significant means for developing students’ abilities to use their minds well, language is a central factor in learning for all students and in all disciplines.”

    Technology will also need to be a large part of our youth’s early education.
