Go get ‘em Mo

This post is for 2009 Alum Mo Phelan.

My name is Muireann Phelan, all my friends call me Mo. I graduated Mineola High School in 2009 and I am currently a sophomore at Towson University where I am majoring in Business Management and minoring in Theatre design. This summer I will be embarking on the experience of a lifetime. I will be cycling from the inner harbor of Baltimore MD to San Francisco. It is a 63 day journey that will be full of happiness, pain and learning. I am cycling with an organization called 4K for Cancer. I ride with 30 other college students, and as we make our way across the United States we stop in towns and cities, inspiring hope in people affected by cancer, and uniting these communities towards this common cause. As we travel across the country, we visit cancer patients, hospitals and cancer centers. We host presentations, offer cancer screenings, and help undeserved communities gain access to support by connecting them to other cancer organizations.

This group was founded in the fall of 2001 when a group of undergraduate students at Johns Hopkins University decided that they wanted to spread awareness while doing something they love, cycling. The ride is 4,000 miles, and since then they have combined to cycle over 900,000 miles and raise over $1,000,000 dollars in the fight against cancer.

The main focus of the ride is fund raising.  Each rider guarantees to raise $4,500, a dollar a mile. All of the money raised goes to cancer societies and other clinics around the Baltimore area. Therefore, I am reaching out to my family, friends, and communities to help raise this money. I know the economic climate is difficult  right now but  donations in any amount  are welcome and greatly appreciated. I am participating in this ride to honor everyone effected by this disease, most especially my Dad, who was diagnosed over a year ago and is battling hard to beat this curse.  He is the strongest person I know and I want to ride in his honor because he has been through so much.

I am very thankful that you have taken the time to read this letter, and I hope you have  a very Happy New Year!
