Transitions

My staff and I are working on a new transition plan that will address some parents concerns about the plan currently on the website.  On February 17, 2011 at the next board meeting I will present another plan that I believe alleviates the problematic transitions as well as slows down a lot of the movement originally presented.  Please join us at the meeting if you are interested.

  1. I apologize for any confusion. We are working quickly to get answers to your questions so we can communicate them correctly to parents. Your recess question is a perfect example. We need to schedule the building before we can commit to an answer. Mr. Barth and Mr. Smith were in last week working on that. School times will be announced on March 3. Start and end times will be adjusted for all of the buildings expect the HS and Willis. In your specific case- due to the failure of the last bond- your fourth grader will move to the MS in the fall. Your first grader will remain at Meadow for one additional year and then move to Jackson. Those two buildings will not have a 2 hour difference in start times.

    Hi Dr. Nagler,

It truly saddens me to see so many people in our district divided.
With all the misinformation that is being spread around, I want to make sure I am getting the correct answers, so I am writing to you directly.

In regards to your last sentence above:
“Please join us at the meeting if you are interested.”
I am very interested, and would gladly attend every BOE meeting if I could. The fact is I work every single Tues. & Thurs. evening and cannot take off. I’m sure I am not the only parent who works nights, so please know there are people out there that want to attend, but have valid schedule conflicts.

Since I wasn’t able to be there, can you please help me understand what the correct/newest/hopefully permanent Transition Plan is?
    I have a 1st grader & a 4th grader at Meadow Drive.
I am confused because I have seen at least 2 conflicting plans published on either the Mineola Patch site or the K12 website.
I don’t recall which was which.

Prior to the last Bond Vote, I had seen it published that regardless of the outcome, the current 4th graders would be remaining at Meadow for their 5th grade year.(2011/2012)

After the vote, I saw a new plan stating that the 4th graders would be immediately moved to the MMS for their 5th grade year (2011/2012)

Now I just saw the above blog about “Transitions” stating there is yet another Transition Plan?

I am trying to present this as a positive thing to my 4th grade daughter, but when I have to keep telling a 9 year old that the plan has changed it’s upsetting to them.

I wanted to wait to tell her what was happening until I was 100% sure what the whole reconfiguration would be, but I have found it necessary to keep her informed of the facts since even in elementary school they are hearing all kinds of rumors.

Also, the news of the immediate move of the 4th graders has sent class moms/PTA members into a tizzy, as this means we now have less than 4 months to plan for, fundraise, and implement all the traditions they would normally have as a 5th grade graduating class.

Lastly, I have two specific questions about the 5th graders at the MMS.
#1) Will the start/end times be adjusted?
I was under the impression you were working on a more homogenous schedule for all the newly formed grade clusters, but I was told by a fellow mom that she had emailed you personally and you had changed your mind and were no longer changing any times?
(This means I will have 2 children starting school nearly 2 hours apart. Maybe it sounds trivial & I know we are working towards a greater good for the whole, but it is still rather inconvenient as it affects many people’s day to day life for years to come)

#2) Will the 5th graders be given outdoor Recess at the MMS?
There is no playground. With childhood obesity at such high rates, these children need every opportunity for exercise. Is Recess a state mandate?

Thank you in advance for your time and answers,
    Patricia Schneider
