I forget what I should remember
In October of 2010 Alan Reardon wrote an opinion letter to the Williston Times requesting the Village of Williston Park to purchase the Cross Street School. I responded on October 28, 2010 with the following:
Nagler responds to Reardon comments
While I applaud the sentiment of Alan Reardon’s article in the last issue (Williston Park should open a community center) I take issue with his assertion that the village should “take the Cross street school by eminent domain so that [it] cannot be sold for residential or commercial development.”
If Mr. Reardon were a resident of the Mineola School District he would know that the Board of Education and I have repeatedly said that we have no interest in selling the property.
Moreover, the board is determined to retain the fields and playground for community use.
In the spirit of collaboration, I personally addressed the Williston Park Village Board and apprised them of the school districts’ intentions.
Should the village wish to lease the Cross Street School we would welcome the conversation.
If it is beneficial to both parties then Mr. Reardon’s vision might come to fruition.
Michael P. Nagler
Superintendent of Schools
Mineola Union Free School District

I think the letter speaks for itself. The District did not enter into an agreement with Solomon Schechter until December 16, 2010.
Kudos to Elsa Coelho and even bigger kudos to Linda Ramos who wrote the best column in The Mineola American last week. Enough already – move forward. The fields belong to the Mineola School District not St. Aidans or Williston Park. Shame on the people of Williston Park – the Rabbi was very courteous and acted like a real gentleman.

After all the commotion in regards to Solomon Schechter School leasing out Cross Street, I find it disheartening that it is NOW that people are in an uproar in regards to leasing out the property. Where were those people when it was time to vote upon the bond, or the other issues related to the MINEOLA school district? Why do the residents of Mineola have to worry about those of Williston Park, especially those that don’t send their children to the Mineola schools but still feel entitled? I don’t want to offend anyone, but I, as a parent, who is planning to stay for the long haul, I think it is only fair that people stop this high school drama and realize that the students are what truly matter. The decision has been made. The re-configuration is done. Now, we need to move forward with the next step. Would those fighting this lease, that would help the MUFSD, rather have a building with no incoming revenue just so they can have a field? I hope that everyone can be realistic and mature about this situation.
