Mineola Superintendent's Blog

Interesting voting facts

  • Of the 19,214 registered voters in Mineola UFSD-  1,849 came out to vote yesterday (9.63%)
  • Only 2, 438 of the 19,214 are currently parents with children in Mineola schools (12.6%)
  • More than half of Mineola’s parents are not registered to vote
  • Of the 2, 438 parents only 663 voted yesterday (27%) or 3.4% of registered voters
  • These facts refute a common belief that parents alone are passing school budgets.  Parents accounted for only 36.6% of the ballots cast yesterday.  Of the 1,249 yes votes the parents accounted for 53% (assuming that all parents voted yes)
  • In this election there were at least 586 non parents that supported the budget.

The Board and I would like to thank everyone who exercised their right to vote

It is sad that so few exercise their right to vote…the numbers seem to dwindle each year….less then 10% came out to vote….

Thank you to the BOE and administration for putting out such a sound and reasonable budget, and thanks to all who helped get it passed.
I know that the district holds a voter registration night early in May, but perhaps a mailing in the beginning of the year to those parents who are not registered to vote encouraging them to register with instructions on how to do so would help get more people registered.
    Just a thought.
    Congrats Mineola!!
