Intel Semi Finalist!
Mineola students can achieve anything! The most recent example of this is Bethanne Bartscherer. Bethanne was named an Intel semi finalist yesterday and to my knowledge, becomes the first recipient of this award in Mineola history
She worked over the summer at North Shore University Hospital doing research on proteins and immunology. The title of her research is: Comparing Novel Cholinergic Agonists’ Potency in Inhibiting Cytokine Production
This is a huge achievement for her, the Science Research Program and the entire Mineola High School community.
Three years ago the Board of Education decided to pursue the goal of producing an Intel semi finalist. It was important to the Board to demonstrate to the community that our students can compete and excel as well as any other district in Nassau county. In the past we have had students attend ivy league colleges as well as had National merit semi finalists and finalists, but the one quality indicator that eluded us was an Intel semi finalist.
So we committed resources and recruited an exceptional teacher, Dr. Ellen McGlade-McCulloh who has developed a thriving program in less than three years.
This year the Board renewed its commitment to the program by listing it as one of their goals for the year. The Board and I were confident that given the opportunity our students will avail themselves to this type of sophisticated research. I hope Bethanne is the first of many over the coming years.
Mineola is beaming with pride today because of Bethanne’s accomplishment, congratulations again!
This is a fantastic accomplishment for Bethanne and for the Mineola Science Department. I look forward to hearing about more students achieving success (in the future) and putting Mineola on the map as the place to go for a great science education! Good luck, but you’ve already made us proud by paving the road for those that WILL follow!
I have one thing to say – AWWWWWWEEEESOME!!!!!!!!!
What a wonderful accomplishment ! Congratulations to everyone who has had the opportunity to help shape this young lady into the person she is about to be !
Congratulations to you Bethanne ! I knew it would not take long at all for a Mineola student to be recognized in this area. I am happy we are now giving students this opportunity through the resources that have been put in place for them. You have made an integral facet of the district shine.
Congratulations Bethanne, great job!
CONGRATULATIONS BETHANNE!! And congratulations to Mineola UFSD for offering this wonderful opportunity to our students!! It’s really NOT about the buildings, but what we put into them!
Congratulations to Bethanne, her parents, Dr. McGlade-McCulloh and the entire Mineola school community. Your hard work is very much appreciated–you make us all very proud!
Congratulations to Bethanne and Dr. McGlade-McCulloh! What a great accomplishment. Good Luck as the process moves forward. We are all very proud of you!
