So where does our garbage go?
Yesterday Mr. Barth, Mr. Hepworth and I went to Jamaica Queens to visit our recycling company’s facility. The Middle School is interested in expanding their recycling program and I was just curious to see how it works. The company (Royal Waste) literally has hundreds of employees that sift through garbage picking out the different types of recyclable material. The material is then bundles into large bails and loaded into containers. The containers are shipped to China. Yes we export our garbage; of course China then sells it back to us after they make something with it.

Project Green at Cross St. is deeply committed to bringing awareness to its children about our planets conservation. It is a year round program that started last year. The kids are excited and enthusiatic. Last year’s composting in the cafeteria was a great success. We used the compost to plant a tree (donated to us) on Earth Day.
Composting cuts on waste and the use of plastic bags while it produces wonderful organic material for planting.
Of Course China makes something and then sells it back to us….lol
I think it is great that the Middle School recycles! It sends a great message to the students as well as it being important for the environment. I have spoken to teachers in other districts who have said that recycling is something their district will not do. I am proud that we do it, and hope the whole district will start.
